One layer coloring tutorial (With lineart layer) and with a bishie

As my personal way of saying thank you to everybody who have faved and commented on my artworks, I will make another tutorial, since I notice millions of people are so curious about how I do my shit art.

Unfortunately, I won't use my updated coloring style to explain this tutorial.

But however, I will give you a goodie I have been working on; coloring with only one layer (With lineart), so this is a two layer tutorial! Yay!

Also, THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER TUTORIAL. I AM GOING TO BE REALLY REALLY BRIEF. <-(Lol capslocks for fun. Haven't done in long time lolol). So you can't be a noob on digital art or drawing. Meaning, you need some knowledge of how to use these sophisticated art programs, and some good art skills to pull off something nice.

Another warning is, I used paint tool SAI for this. I think anything which has layers and can blend colors(Photoshop, painter, Illustudio, whatnots) can also work too, but don't come here whining to me plzthx

If you are OK, go beyond the line below, and click on that link which will expand this blog entry.

So make a rough art of your drawing, and make the sketch.

It can be clean or messy. I make it...Between clean and messy this time. Mine is either really clean, or really messy, depending on my mood. I try to keep it clean snce I am very prone to mistakes.

Now start giving it lines.

Unlike the usual one layer lineless painting, this is a two layer painting, which the coloring layer is only one, and it is just colored like how you do on a lineless artwork, so make the lines CLEAN as you can.

Ah...Speaking of Shun (This character in the drawing is Shun Kazami from Towa no Quon. The outfit is my design though, its for a crossover series I have been babbling about.), if you look at his hair in the official artworks, he sure does have a one heck of a messy hair. And I beg you please don't attempt the moe face like how I did, whether the chara is female or male.

If you are finished with the lines, now lets start having these settings.

Brushsetting.png

Even both settings are in the deep mode, I actually switch it around normal and deep. Try switching around, and you might get pleasant results.

Also, for the colors...It can be anything you want, but since this is brush is a copic style brush, I would recommend that you use copic colors. But again, its optional, so you can just use your own colors if you wish.

To get a color chart to use for color picking, download this PDF file.

http://www.copicmarker.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/copic_346_family_chart.pdf

And screen shot it, and paste it on your file by treating it like a color pallete.

If you are planning to use only the colors from the copic chart, then my advice is use a light base for each part of the color, then go deeper into the hue, then the even darker ones as the shades. Be creative and mix the colors.

Now prepare your coloring layer. Be sure it is filled WHITE. It is just like when you color stuff on paper, the ink sorta blends with the white right? So have the coloring layer filled WHITE! Get it?

All done?

Get your colors ready, Get set...Go!

Oh yeah, before I forget, these are the colors I used on Shun (The character. Remember? If not, then you ain't reading properly :D ).

Done coloring the character? Color the line art, cuz in my opinion, the colors will stand out more, and it looks more interesting and yummy. Do the background. Do it as how you would do with the character.

And add some more interesting stuff if you wish.

asdfghjkl This is pretty much it.

WAIT. DID I SAY BYE YET? NO. I HAVE NOT. NOW STOP RIGHT HERE OR ELSE YOU WILL MISS STUFF!

If you notice, the colors look...Pretty washed and dull right? So its time to fancy up.

So what can we do?

If you have Photoshop, GIMP, Illustudio or anything that can adjust curves, levels, color balance, gaussian blur, etc, use that. I used overlay layers and a screen layer to adjust it, along with curves, levels, color balance on mine.

If you don't such tools, then I will tell you this one trick possible in SAI I found in another tutorial, which is by Namie-Kun. Which is to duplcate the artwork, and set it to multiply and transparency is 50 %. And make the other duplicate layer really dark and set to overlay. For more details, check Namie-Kun's tutorial at the end since I really suck at explaining.

And this looks prettier right? Well, the colors...^^;

Also, what is even sexiah, is TEXTURES.

Pick a texture of your choice, be sure it is black, and set it to overlay and adjust the transparency.

Tada! We just finished this!

NOW THIS IS THE END. Class is dismissed. You can go now kiddies.

See ya next time!
